What does "monitoring" mean?

Monitoring refers to the continuous process of monitoring IT systems, networks, and applications to ensure their performance, availability, and security.

Through effective monitoring, organizations can ensure the reliability and performance of their IT infrastructure and hosting services, detect problems early, and take appropriate action before they impact operations.

What is being monitored?

System Monitoring (Server Monitoring):

Monitoring of server resources such as CPU utilization, memory, disk capacity, and network activity. This helps identify bottlenecks and optimize system performance.

Network Monitoring:

Monitoring network performance, including bandwidth usage, latency, packet loss, and network devices such as routers and switches. This ensures that the network operates reliably and efficiently.

Application Monitoring:

Monitoring application performance and availability. This includes tracking metrics such as response times, error rates, and user interactions to ensure that applications function as intended.

Log Monitoring:

Analysis of log files to identify security-related events, application errors, and system failures. Tools such as the ELK Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) assist with centralized log management and analysis.

Database Monitoring:
  • Monitoring database performance, including query times, locks, database accesses, and storage space. This helps improve database efficiency and identify potential problems early on.
Cloud Monitoring:

Specific monitoring of cloud resources and services to track their usage, costs, availability, and security. This also includes monitoring cloud-specific metrics and services.

Security Monitoring:

Monitoring security-related events and threats to detect and prevent attacks and unauthorized access. This includes monitoring firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and other security solutions

End-User Monitoring:

Monitoring the user experience by measuring metrics such as page load times, application performance from the end user's perspective, and service availability.

Alerts and Notifications:

Set up alert systems that send notifications to administrators when certain thresholds are reached or anomalies are detected. This enables a rapid response to potential problems.

Dashboards and Reporting:

Creating dashboards and reports to visualize monitoring data. These tools help you keep track of system performance and identify trends and potential issues.

Analysis and Monitoring with Kibana in the ELK Stack

In many of our projects, we use the open-source software Kibana to visualize and analyze large amounts of data. This allows us to visually represent and analyze data streams from system logs, application logs, and infrastructure data. It is often used as part of an ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).

How Kibana Works and Its Applications in Monitoring:

Data Visualization: Kibana offers interactive dashboards and visualization tools such as charts, heat maps, and maps, which make it easy to monitor and analyze the performance and status of systems and applications.

Real-time monitoring: Kibana enables real-time data monitoring, which is particularly useful for responding quickly to current issues. Logs and metrics are processed almost instantly, allowing administrators to immediately detect anomalies and take action.

Log Management and Analysis: With Kibana, logs from various sources can be consolidated and searched, making root cause analysis easier. By using filters and search queries, specific events can be identified, allowing administrators to work more efficiently.

Alerts and Notifications: In combination with the Elastic Stack, alerts can be configured based on specific events or thresholds. This allows administrators to set up notifications that are triggered when certain conditions—such as high CPU load or memory bottlenecks—occur.

Analysis and Troubleshooting: Kibana helps with analyzing and troubleshooting issues by consolidating metrics and logs into a centralized interface. This makes it easier for administrators to identify problems and understand why systems or applications are slowing down or failing.

Reporting and Data Export: Kibana also allows you to create reports and export them to share analyses and performance metrics with other teams or external stakeholders.
